How do you meditate?

I just sit in a chair, close my eyes, relax my body, and still my mind.

I have tried literally all sorts of techniques However, being an intellectual person, the technique that I find most effective for me is watching my thoughts and conversations in my mind. It requires great deal of awareness hence I find it most effective to reduce the constant chatter going on in my mind.

Also, I just don't limit my practice to few designated hours. I constantly remind myself every now and then to be aware and watch the thoughts. Another great benefit of this technique is that it helps you a lot to stay detached.

I mean if you are constantly watching your mind, you cannot get distracted by or attracted to the source of turmoil. If your awareness is outside (with your mind) most of the time, then it is very easy to get distracted and by the time you have realized, you have already been engulfed in a sea of emotions and agitation.

I'm fairly new to meditation. I resisted it for a long time because I didn't really see how I could benefit from it.

How wrong I was! I finally got started because I heard that meditation is the ultimate form of "Allowing" according to Law of Attraction teachings by Abraham/Hicks.

when I heard on one of their CDs that it would help me attract the things i wanted by suspending my resistance for those 15 minutes I meditated, I got started immediately.

And how did I do it? Watching my breath was not quite working for me. So I added a color meditation to it, where I visualize myself immersed in one color after the other. It works with chakra colors, though I used a different set that works well for me.

I just set the alarm for 15 minutes and cycle through the colors. It's just enough to keep my mind occupied without it taking me out of the zone. And the effects have been quite gratifying.

I have observed that I can meditate well after some good exercise and when my body is tired and warm. I do sudarshan kriya ( art of living course by sri sri ravi shankar). It takes exactly 24 -25 minutes to finish it. It is a series of breathing techniques. After doing this i sit calmly and be aware of my breath. To come near to thoughtless state becomes very easy after these exercises.

I also be aware of my aura and its colours.

I use theta wave music and lie down, focusing on my breathing. When thoughts come up, I just don't focus on them so they go away. It helps me relax and relives my stress.

On another thought, as long as you are using a technique, you are not truly meditating. Technique involves some effort and the effort comes from mind. As long as mind is involved, one cannot experience deep meditation. More the effort, farther you are from real bliss.

Here's my experience:

I had been on a vacation recently and it had been a rejuvenating experience. I had no worries and the mind was calm. My sleep was better and my health improved. More importantly, I was contented.

Now that I have returned from the vacation, mind has become active. Desires have started cropping and getting back to my self has become difficult, contrary to my vacation period where I was more with my self.

It's wonderful to watch all this thing where your mind slowly drags you from your self to the outside world and keeps you busy.

Real meditation can happen only when you stay connected with your presence during you daily routine. This way, the time you actually sit for meditation can only deepen your experience. Otherwise it'll only be a shallow experience and you'll be only moving back and forth without reaching anywhere.

you mentioned that when we are using a technique one is using the mind. But for anything one has to use the mind. like working, eating, playing ( I am speaking from the meditation point of view, like trying to be fulling involve in what one is doing) how do you explain this?

While getting involved completely in something does still the mind, and it does help a great deal, it is not meditation as such. Meditation is withdrawing from your senses completely, so only your self remains. I'm talking about real meditation. In any activity there is some sense organ involved. The more you are attached to that sense, the difficult it is to withdraw yourself from it and connect toyour self.

These are all very good ideas for mediation. I have tried my hand at meditation myself but have trouble quieting my mind. I have tried mantra but find that my thoughts continue to drift. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also because of limited time. I have meditated for very short periods of time about 5 minutes. I do find it makes me calmer.

The present lifestyle is such that it's not entirely possible to quieten the mind by just sitting few minutes a day for meditation. One has to make a conscious effort throughout the day to be aware and mindful. I like Eckhart Tolle's method of being aware of the inner body throughout the day. It'll help tremendously in quietening the mind.

I've gotten into it, researched all self help books- have acheived a beautiful state- then i had a car accident(lol) and had big trouble with two females.

Im still learning. I found Gael Chierallas cds to be the best guided mediations, and Im actually friends with her on Face book and she's PMed me.

The only time it really works is when I lie on the couch and am going to sleep and i can put a music channel with mediation music on while im sleeping.

Im an attorney and have had heavy heavy stress the last two months (leading me close to breakdowns).

I listen to Gael Chiarella (shes on amazon/itunes- im not promoting her) on the ipod going into work (the ipod is great), I have other unguided mediation music on their, self help books (wayne dyer others)

Ive meditated to Billy joel recently in the car.

My home page is learningmediation.com? and they have good mediations on there. for like 5 minutes.

But the power of negative people and your mind pulling is a difficult thing to learn to calm down.

My thoughts.

That is visualization. Don't confuse it with meditation. Meditation is emptying your mind and being free.

Hello,

Meditating is such a relaxing exercise. What I do is that I lie down on my bed and clear out whatever's on my mind. I usually think of something happy like being at a meadow or at the beach. I just lie there just thinking about that happy place. I also play some music in the background to set the mood. I prefer plaing classical music in the background. After relaxing for about an hour, I feel more relaxed and energized.

Deepak Chopra has come up with a great meditation training product for those who don't yet know how to do it. It is a computer-based video game and you hook yourself up to it a with a biofeedback device. In order to win or progress in the game, you have to learn how to control your body's natural rhythms. It's called the Journey to Wild Divine.

Heart Math has another tool called emWave. It teaches you to control your stress through breathing and relaxation. It's a small device that fits in a purse or pocket and when you feel anxiety or stress, you place your thumb on the pad and breath/meditate until you have achieved four green lights, I think.

You can also get these little stress cards (about the size of a credit card) and with the same idea (thumb on pad) you practice deep breathing and relaxation until the card moves away from black end to the other end of the colour spectrum.

Sit in calm place and be aware of the breath. The ultimate meditation. Also prior to this I do Agnihotra ( a spiritual practice ) and then sit for meditaiton. I see that I get time to sit for long hours of meditation. This makes me feel more calm and stable through out the day.

I have recently also started Beej Mantra meditation. A kundalini meditation programme learnt at kinigoli Yogashra, mulki, mangalore, India.

Practicing yoga postures helps me quiet the mind and prepare for meditation. Watching the breath, watching my thoughts but not going with them, just keeping awareness of my breath and myself sitting of holding my posture helps me stay centred.

It really helps to practice with a group, too. I meet weekly for chanting mantras and silent meditation at the Sivananda Yoga Centre near where I live.

Yoga is an natural support for meditation. The postures and breathwork really do calm the mind and ease stress.

Absolutely! I just happened to read a book called "Moving into Stillness" recently and it made my love for Yoga even more deeper. The book is truly amazing and it teaches yoga like no other book I have read so far.

I found Moving into Stillness very helpful too. Eric Schiffman describes the physical geometry of the asanas with precision and grace, but also communicates the pranic, or energy, plane of the practice, which is where the deeper benefits begin.

Newbie Shield gives great formula: sit, relax, and still the mind. Unfortunately, the last "ingredient" has been subject of many discussions and there are many "experts" in the field and it turns out that it is not as easy as one could assume.

As Vishal mentioned if you use certain technique, you might not be meditating. We need to keep in mind that as long as we keep thinking that there is some electrical activity in our brain (brain waves!) and therefore we really can not achieve deep state of relaxation. We want to lower this electrical activity.

Keeping you mind focused in one point (hara) and proper breathing can greatly help.
