Quoting: stbalaji2u While some also say that breaking out things as said in answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080523100819AAXiCKY and watching fight shows like WWE also help to relief stress do any of you ever experienced it so far?
Each one of us may have a way to release pent up stress. Some of them may be violent and some of them may be passive. It's OK once in a while to engage in harmless activity like hitting a pillow or punching bag to release anger but one must not get addicted to it. Today you may hit a pillow. One day you might hit somebody else.
You must learn how to stop stress before it consumes you in the first place.

A good laugh with a good friend is one of the best ways I know to relieve stress!
But deep breathing, music and aromatherapy oils are also good.

You can also go to a place where there's no people and vent out your anger or stress and shout out loud to let it all out. It's also helpful. It's also a way of releasing those negative emotions from your body.

My brother releases his stress and anger on his punching bag. He swears by the results.

I don't know if this is healthy but I find that I'm least stressed when I'm not consciously thinking about being stressed, ie. breathing exercises and other things. I like to listen to my favorite music and do things that I enjoy, that seems to help keep my mind off the stressors and really keep me upbeat and ready to feel good!

Excellent point Timlara and it's absolutely healthy. Distraction is one of the best ways to manage stress. Worry grows only when you give more power to it by attention. When you stop thinking about the problem or cease to give importance to it, worry no longer exists.

Hi Izrul, find things that you enjoy. When you are happy, you feel at ease and relaxed. Me, I love to read, so I just read any interesting books while listening to a music.

Hello-
I noticed that most of the responses to managing stress were based on "things" you can do such as exercise, breathing, talking to a friend etc.
These are great ways to meet stress head on but I'd also like to suggest certain lifestyle changes that can be made to prevent stress in the first place.
Now, I know everyone experiences stress at some time or another but I'd like to share a few key actions I've discovered to help prevent certain types of stress resulting from for example financial problems.
Here are 3 Simple Ways to Prevent Stress:
1- Learn to live a balanced life. That means learning how to manage your schedule and learning to say no so you don't experience burn out
2- Living within your means. That's right living on a budget and watching your spending
3- Stop trying to live up to unrealistic expectations. There's always going to be someone around who is richer, more attractive, has nicer things, a bigger house whatever. The media likes to magnify a person's looks, especially if they have it going on. You'll drive yourself nuts trying to live up to someone else's expectations. Most of the stuff you see on tv movies and magazines anyway is all fluffed up.
Learn to enjoy what you have and stop trying to compete with The Jones' (an old school term LOL)
Well that's my 50 cents worth (not bad for a first post huh? or at least I thought so )

Excellent Michelle! Techniques are important only when you are already stressed. With little lifestyle changes, as Michelle suggested, you'll not need any techniques at all.

Thanks Vishal. I wouldn't say that no techniques will be needed, even with lifestyle changes. We all will experience some stress rather we do all the so called right things or not. For example, who doesn't feel the stress when they are sitting in traffic (I'm a New Yorker!) and late for an appointment! Those deep breathing techniques and even turning on a peaceful music station (ex: jazz) will sure come in handy!

You are right Michelle. But stress affects only those who are prone to stress. I mean once your system has been programmed to be stress free, your entire approach towards life changes and little things do not matter any more. Even if stress does strike you, you need not have to do anything explicitly to fight it. It'll go automatically, because stress doesn't like you anymore

Hello
The best way to release stress is to 'Mind Dump.'
By this I mean take a piece of paper, or what ever you can get you hands on and wright everything down that is on your mind. I do mean EVERYTHING. It could be the clothes you need to get ready to get your kids to school in the morning, preparing the report that is due on your bosses desk at 9am or you need to pick up some dog food at the store, before Paddy starves!! This isn't a 30 second job, take 5,10... an hour if you need to do this. I coached one person who had that much on his mind that this took a full morning. Once everything that is on your mind, is now not on your mind, close your eyes and take a big deep breath.... How do you feel?? (let me know I never get board of that part).
That isn't it though. Everything you just wrote down now needs organising into a system or your brain wont let go of it. Try putting these thoughts into some kind of diary, to-do order, or even better, a system to give them a slot in your life when you can deal with them one by one. DO NOT LET THEM CREEP BACK UP INTO YOUR HEAD!! Any new thoughts add them to your piece of paper. (If you would like further advice on this part let me know)
Your brain is an excellent gathering tool, but struggles to cope with more than seven tasks at a time, and as such can cause stress issues. Free it up to think and problem solve, don't clutter it up with the 1000+ things that could be organised else where.
Einstein didn't know his own telephone number, as he would not use his enormous brain to store information he could assess in other means!!
Its worth a thought.
If I could be of anymore assistance to anyone I would love to help.

You should have a regular exercise to help your body increase blood flow. Learn how to control your breathing. Have friends.

I think it depends on the type of stress that you are feeling.
But for me personally, I find that physical exercise is a great way to relieve stress This is for a number of reasons: 1. releases the feel good chemicals (endorphins) into the body
2. makes me feel better about my image
3. gives me a chance to release the tension of accumulated stress that tends to be in my shoulders and neck
4. provides me with the opportunity to build my social support network

I agree with you. In most cases, physical exercise really does help freshen you up physically, mentally and emotionally.

I believe physical exercise is the best strategy for reducing and preventing the negative effects of stress. It provides benefits on a physical and emotional level, by regulating the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, and helping to regulate stress hormones such as cortisol. In other words, you'll feel better and be healthier.
When someone is completely overwhelmed with stress or anxiety another effective strategy is hypnosis. Hypnotherapy can work extremely well for quieting the body and mind and also for treating the root of the problem.
