Does anyone have any tips for things to do on the spot to combat stress/anxiety that don't involve listening to things etc.
The reason I ask is that work is unbearable at the moment and when things get bad and I feel like I'm only just keeping my head above water I was wondering if there was anything I could do there and then.
My usual escape is to go and lock myself in the loo for 10 minutes (as no-one can disturb me) but my other alternative would be strolling round the car park (but chances are I'd get sidetracked for advice by someone on the way out!).
Are there any visualisation or breathing exercises (for example) that people know work?

You can always take a deep breath and enjoy the serenity of nature. This can help to ease your stress and calm your mind. Take three deep breaths slowly. If you don't feel like meditating or if you don't have the time to do so, just stop for a minute, take a deep breath through your nose, and let the tension drain from your muscles as much as possible. Deep breathing will relax you significantly.
Other than that, you can also relax by looking at the aquarium ( if you have one ) . This is a sure way of relaxing your mind!

A persons sense of smell is also a powerful tool to use to relieve stress on the spot. Having a scented lavender cushion or aromatic lotions or hand creams are beneficial as they release powerful fragrances that sooth and calm the mind. There are many methods you can use to relieve stress, it is just finding the one suitable to you and your lifestyle.

You can also do some stretching in your area and I think it's allowed in your office, right? Whenever I feel stressed, I just stretch my arms, legs and back (still seated to avoid all eyes to me) while my eyes are closed. It takes me about 5 minutes to do that. If the weather outside is good, I walk around for max of 15minutes, or I'll just ask the guard if I can stay in the fire exit of the building for just 10minutes. If you do this, please inform someone where you are and don't forget to bring your cell phone. For me, being alone in a quiet place relieves my stress. If you have any reading room, spend your time there more often or in any quiet area.

These are all good suggestions. I've used them all and they are effective!
I particularly like to do a yoga breathing technique whereby you breathe deeply through one nostril and then alternate over the course of a few minutes. This helps balance the brain and calms the nervous system. I find it very relaxing and it can be done easily during trip to the bathroom. Best wishes to you.

Guided Imagery or visualization is another great technique you can use if you can get 5 or 10 minutes in a reasonably peaceful location. Close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths, then imagine yourself in a peaceful location where you feel relaxed and safe - it might be a tropical beach, a forest or a riverbank - whatever works for you. Then, when you have the picture fixed in your mind's eye, you need to involve all your other senses. If for example your imagining a tropical beach, think of the sound of the waves lapping on the beach, the feel of the sand running through your fingers, the smell of the sea, etc. The more detailed the imagery, the more relaxed you will feel when you've finished. Stay for a few minutes in this state, then slowly allow yourself to return to 'reality' - you should feel more relaxed!

I like to wash my face in the restroom. That helps me. Slow breathing. Close your eyes for a few seconds. Clear your thoughts and then focus them.

I try closing my eyes and do some deep breathing exercise for a few minutes in my cubicle. Alternatively, I will get out of the office for quick break and regain my mental clarity back. I will normally feel better after the attempt. You might want to give it a try.

Hello Here are some things you can do to relieve stress instantly: - Call a friend. Taking a break to call a friend will help you to get your mind off things and remind you that you don't have to face the world alone
- Close your eyes, use imagination and practice deep breathing
- Take a small brake and go cloud watching
- Squeeze something, stress ball for example. It is a great way to beat frustration
- Have a cup of chamomile tea

The best answer to stress is always to do some deep breathing. When we get stressed, breathing gets very fast and shallow. Breathing is the only bodily function we can consciously control. So take yourself of somewhere, preferably not the loo. Sit down Breath in for the count of seven and then out for the count of 11. Keep doing this for three or four minutes. This will slow your breathing and calm your mind at the same time. Try doing this before work, during every break and before bed. Honestly it will help.

Hey, All the advice given are great! However if we try to relax when we ar stressed we are bound to fail It is like hanging on to a rope over a cliff and somebody shouts "Just relax" and you think "Are you mad, I'll fall!" We must practise relaxation techniques when we are relaxed and then when it is a conditioned response we can do it at will even whaen we are stressed. So, start practising when you don't feel stressed on Friday nights, carry on right through the week-end and on Monday and the rest of the week. You will not only find that you are more rested and relaxed at work but the technique will kick in with out your prompting. At work take regular breaks i.e. every hour and practise your chosen technique . There are a large number of free techniques on the Internet; the Siva Method, The Mind-Body Institute, Natural Hypnosis to name a few. Mind-Body have a 10 minute guided meditation if I remember correctly. Siva have a long and good rexation technique but then a visualization and countdown technique that prompt the relaxation, IF practised regularly. If you are in a client service position visualization works like a charm, in your mind you can be in Hawai while the client is throwing a temper tantrum with a smile on your face!
