hi friends,
im 25 yrs old,
i want you people to advise me to take a good decision and how to forget the big mistake i made in past.
my problem is
im a graduate in film studies(2003 - 2006),due to my parents discouragement i couldnt concentrate in the studies and had to concentrate only in business but not in studies(film).
anyhow i completed the course, after my graduate i felt my mistake and shouted at my parents and then they let me to choose my career..
(here comes the mistake i did..)
so i applied in to two universities..in which one is film related which is very costly and another one is low fee but not related to film or specializations..but partly and which does'nt give any importance to anything..but just a master degree..,my parents told me to join in both course which is not possible..
and at that time 2007 i selected the one which is low fee and which is not good..i selected it because of my over confidence..that i can learn it through internet(film editing)..and saving money !!!
in the college from the first day to the end it was a big disaster to me..as it was not helping to build my career in film editing or giving me time to self learning..and overall the course disturbed me a lot...
and also i was not able to make my parents to understand my situation as it was my own choice..
some how i managed and tried to complete the course and learning the stuff on my own...but due to lack of attendance at the middle part(2009) of the course they thrown me out of the college !!!
this is another disaster...!!!
so by not telling my parents about myself getting thrown out of college i spent two years from 2009-2011 till now as a unsuccessful editor..ie due to lack of certificate and full knowledge..i didnt got any job or many good projects...and im at very lower position as compared to many editors in the field,in this 2 years i somehow managed to get projects which are very low end..in which only a very few projects made me satisfy..other projects just helped me to survive..but i want to get big/grow in this field and since editing is not a
easy job and should have lots of knowledge..
and so i am really struggling to get a good project or movies..and also i dont have confidence to contact a good director..
but i want to be successful...and i know whatever we do..we should need a good educational background...
so i made my decision again to join in the same film course which is costly but really good with the help of my parents again..
the problem is......
so somehow i've wasted time from 2007-2011 4 years..i might gained a lot..but loss is very big..and at this time i am again trying to spend money in this age...and i am afraid what if i fail again..?why i did not do this at 2007 itself..??why i did not do this and that and anything in this 4 years..???and seeing other young editors making me feel inferior..
friends these thoughts are really haunting me down to hell..letting me not to take anything good....

Dear karthikraaja,

4 years is nothing. There are endless stories of people who started their career in their sixties. Don't think that you have lost 4 years. Think you have 4 more years in experience.

Don't spend your time thinking why did you do it or why it happened to you? It was destined to happen and it happened. What's really important is the inner drive to succeed and you have it in great degree in you. You are destined to succeed.

Past is history and age is just a number. What matters is your present. Listen to your heart and don't let anything else bog you down. And lastly, don't compare yourself with others. That is the worst thing you can do to you. Each one of us has a unique road to travel. Enjoy the journey and forget your past.

Just an addition, if you are regretting the four years you wasted, why not think if you don't do your best today, that four years might increase. So better concentrate on what you have now and enjoy it.

Dear Karthik, I can tell you from personal experiences that repenting for the past does not help and being fearful of failure is the worst thing you can do to yourself. So this is what I would suggest you do:

1. Look for the lessons that you learned from losing this time.
2. Sit in a quite place, close your eyes and say with a sincere heart "I forgive myself for my past mistakes".
3. Shift your focus completely onto the future, the way you want it to be, take action in the present moment and simply "let go" of the past.
4. Be happy, come what may.

Focus on the successes of your four years of education and what you learned. Use this to shape what you're able to do in your future and what you need to improve upon. You are still young. It is during these years that you are still developing the skills you need for a very solid, lifelong career.

Great advice from everyone. First off, you are still very young. Don't waste your youth stressing over the progressing years otherwise one day you WILL be old and regret the wasted time and opportunities due to this line of thinking.

Forget the past, there is nothing you can do about what did or did not happen. It doesn't even exist anymore. How does it help you to dwell on it and beat yourself up?

Stay in the present - it's the only thing you really have. Do what you need to do to make money and focus on developing your job skills Stay positive and be loving to yourself so you can attract the right people and situations in your life. The latter is probably the most important thing you can do. Love really is the answer.

Best wishes!

Never look at your time as wasted, but focus on that time as a learning experience. If you focus on it as time wasted, then it will be time wasted. But if you focus on it as a stepping stone to a brighter future then it will be that. You can now go into another chapter of your life with a better knowledge that few may possess. If you go and get your other certification you will move yourself further. Most people that want secondary education has to go to school for two years anyway so look at it as an investment instead of time wasted
