Hello all, I'm new to this forum as I just registered today. I have a concern regarding my sleeping habits lately. I awake sometimes 3-4 times in the middle of the night, mind racing and have trouble falling back asleep. I'm wondering...am I stressed, depressed or just an insomniac.

These are initial signs of insomnia. It just shows that your mind is working way too much. Meditate for at least an hour before sleeping. And absolutely no stimulating activities like television, chatting, etc. before sleeping.

Hi, the insomnia is caused by something - most probably stress. You need to find out what exactly is bothering you, and start working on your problems, and thus to reduce the stress. You should not ignore it, when you detect the symptoms of the stress, hoping it will go away by itself, because it could easily become a depression.
I would advise you to turn to a therapist without delay.

If this is a recent development, rather than worrying about the diagnosis, I suggest that you look into what is going on in your life right now. Obviously your mind is not at rest.
Taking a close look at what is bothering you and then see what you can do about it. If it is a situation that you can't change, then look into changing your mindset about it.
There are many techniques to do that. Meditation is a great technique as Vishaal suggested. There are also several others such as relaxation training, guided imagery, cognitive behavior therapy etc. I wish you good luck in finding the technique that you like out of the many that are available.

And the irony of sleep is that if you stress or get anxious about not sleeping, it makes it more likely you won't sleep.

The more relaxed you can be in bed, the better.

I sometimes use guided imagery (as recommended above) to help me fall asleep-imagining the most relaxing scene I can think of and just be there in my mind.

Hi iampuzzled,

One thing you must be cleared of is that, insomnia is one of the effect of stress. When you are worryig about something, your mind can't get rid of it. So naturally when you are resting, your mind is not fully resting. I ever had this problem as well. I will be awaked automatically, worrying how am i going to finish all the projects that i'm habdling. After some time, i realised that time management is very important. When we have a well-planned time management, we will have sufficient time to accomplish all the projects. Hence, this will help to ease our stress.

But first and foremost, you must understand the real reason why you are awaked in the morning. Is it too many works that make you feel stress? Or otherwise?

Hope this helps, good luck iampuzzled.

This may sound a bit odd, but to deal with worry I've done a couple things. First, I've started a worry journal to put all worries on paper. The act of putting pen to paper sometimes relieves the worry.

Second, and this will sound the strangest. I've scheduled "worry time" each day for maybe 15 minutes. I sit down and worry as much as possible during that time. My goal is to worry. If a worry comes up any other time during the day, I say to myself "save it for worry time."

Very interesting. I think I may have to try both of them!
