Hello all this is my first post. I'll give some info on me, Im 33 y/o male. Ive had a few anxiety issues in the past, (5 years ago). I work as a maintenance tech for a large multi family housing outfit. I am the only employee there besides the manager. The property is in decent shape. but I never get supplies that i need. Im always worrying about something. I do Everything there except cut the grass. About two months ago I got a message that the Big Wigs were coming to check everything out. Well when i heard this, I started having stomach issues, Constipation and such. Well these issues went away after some medicine from the doctor. After this, we were given an ultimatum. The place had to be at a certain occupancy by thanksgiving, or else. Since this decision, I have been working night and day to try to get everything done that I can, The company will not hire any help for me and I am paying friends of mine out of my pocket. I have to buy supplies out of my pocket. I have been having wierd feelings and pains. When i lay down, my chest hurts on the left side, not near my heart, but in my side and back. Also my back and legs hurt for what I believe is no reason. I have the scarriest feelings at night before bed and in the morning when i wake up. As long as I take a xanax when the feelings come on, i feel ALOT better. I guess what im asking is, Can all this be caused by stress?

Hi gb123,

I agree with the conclusion Ellen came to because these a prime examples of the negative effects of stress. However, there are solutions because millions of people deal with stress on a daily basis and win!
Are you willing to try something new?
There is a good thread on music therapy which can help you find soothing music.
Yoga has been known to relieve stress and cultivate serenity for centuries.
A well-balanced diet is fundamental to a healthy digestive system and can assist your constipation.
Surely, I suggest to stay very careful of xanax. I had that prescribed by my doctor too, until I got a second opinion from another doctor who warned me of the dependency that pill can form.

It has something called benziadopenes (not sure if i spelled that right) in it and that is the single element that causes dependence.

You do not have to depend on pills to get the stress relief you desire, so please look into some of these other methods and make lowering your stress levels your NUMBER ONE PRIORITY FOR 2012!

Wishing you the best of success with this!

qb123,

Definitely sounds like stress. It has been over a month now since your post, and I'm curious to hear how things are going with you now.

It sounds like you will do 'whatever it takes' for your job - that's an amazing dedication, and I'm sure more employers wish they had employees with that kind of dedication. However, sacraficing you time and health, and paying for help out of your own pocket are above the call of duty. I would recommend thinking about where your boundaries are with your work (I have much personal experience in boundary-less-ness with work myself!) An think about what is reasonable to you and what is not. And begin to draw some lines for yourself. Maybe even talk to others to find out their sense of boundaries with work - just as an outside point of reference.

Real, tangible skills like yours will always be needed. So if you are afraid of this ultimatum, know that there will always be another place that you can work if you should choose to do so.

When in a situation like this, it can also be helpful to use the 80/20 rule. Determine what is the 80% that is going to make the biggest difference at your work and focus on doing that - then let the other 20% go. No job is ever finished, and it's good to know when to call it a day.

Take some time for yourself each day to relax and mentally let go of your responsibilities. And plan something fun with your family or friends, and remember that there's more to life than work.

Best wishes,
Michelle
