Hi Cool,
It's an unfortunate situation that everyone finds themselves in - some more often than others - from time to time.
We can only play along until something changes. We have to empower ourselves so that we aren't quite as vulnerable to the control of others.
This usually means education and higher income. It always means that we have to learn how to bring value to the table. Contribution is - for better or worse - everything. Everyone values and respects contribution.
Contribution comes in many forms. It might be putting time into helping a cause - contributing skills, money, or expertise. It might be boosting morale, teaching a skill or a set of ethics, donating equipment, listening, or even tending to the sick.
It's best to improve in each of these areas as much as possible. Nothing beats the feeling of improving something or being appreciated for helping out in some way.
Setting a good example does wonders for my self esteem.
As an aside, communication skills and a will to be solution-oriented are highly valued in any setting. It's best to be calm and logical. It's good to work at solving dilemmas rather than objecting or raising trouble.
Objective, fair problem solvers are very highly valued -those that try to put out the flames and come up with solutions that help everyone involved.
