That is a very broad question. The general answer would be to maintain your mental and physical health. There are many aspects of stress and benefits to managing it varying from having a healthy weight to being more productive.

Stress is a normal phenomenon in our everyday lives, and can often help us to perform better at certain tasks. However, this type of stress is only helpful in short bursts.
Problems can arise when the stress persists for extended periods of time. There can be situations where one feels overwhelmed by the pressures in their life, and it's not immediately obvious to him or her how to deal with that pressure. Now, dealing with one problem is not usually too difficult and can be handled by most people. It gets serious when there are multiple factors, each causing stress on their own, and they combine into excessive stress for the sufferer.
Common examples of this are having a demanding job as well as dealing with issues in one's personal life such as financial or relationship problems. If these 'stressors' are not managed properly the chronic stress can develop into various types of physical and physiological health problems.
The significance of stress management is to avoid the negative health affects of stress and live a fulfilling life by being able to first recognize how stress is affecting your life, identify the stressors, and find a method of dealing with them one-by-one.
I hope this helps.

I agree with drgc, stress management is about managing yourself.
In life, we all encounter many challenges and situations. In some we need to be receptive to listen and understand. In others we need to be persuasive. In others we need to be persistent.
The goal of stress management has got to be to go beyond the basics and to manage your emotional state so well, that when you meet with these situations you are in the appropriate emotional state to best meet the challenge they bring.

The goal of stress management is not so much eradicate stress from your life, but rather get stress to a point that it is not impacting on your quality of life.
Your question is a very broad one, but current research shows that the effects of a fast-paced life are leading to increasing competition and stress in day-to-day routine.
This, combined with the effect of chronic stress on your body, makes stress management an important thing to do.
There are plenty of ways to de-stress, and probably the most common are relaxation activities like yoga and meditation.
These stress management techniques, along with many others, activate the relaxation response that counters the effects of stress on the body. All the best Kell

the significance of stress management is that when you are practicing it, you will learn how to control your emotions so that people won't think of you as an over-reactor, but you will also be able to control your mind to stay positive. With a positive attitude any task can be completed and on time.
hope it can help.....
