A lot of smoking is the fixation of having something in your and hands. If you can keep both busy he should be fine. This is what my mother did and it worked great for her.

Part of the no smoke freak out deal is that it is so addictive. Example for a friend who smoked for close to 15 yrs ended up quitting, lost someone close to them, started up for about a week (during the funeral) then quit again. Smokers will go through spurts but the best thing you can do is help to be there for them, even if that means hearing a rant or seven.

Hi Jake,

Smoking is a rough habit. It's physically addictive, but that wears off in days. It's emotionally addictive because it affects the neurotransmitters in the brain resulting in a calm-stimulation of the body, mind, and emotions. It's ritualistic - handling the cigarette, lighting it, inhaling, exhaling.

The habit hooks in very deeply in many ways and it is at least as addictive as heroin.

It has to be replaced with several things at once.

Exercise is a must. Having things to drink and chew on are a must. Avoid alcohol as it increases the urge and decreases resistance. Relaxation is required. Awareness of thought patterns that may lead to smoking and triggers is needed.

Taking up a couple hobbies will help.

Your friend might consider switching to chewing tobacco for a month and then quitting that. I don't like the idea but some report that it works.

Acting calm and a little agreeable around them will help.

I've succeeded in quitting both cigarettes and chewing tobacco. It was one of the toughest things I have ever done.

I wish your friend the very best.

try sucking a baby bottle with nipple. You can suck any liquid like water, milk, juice etc. Osho says smoking cigratte is directly related to the subconscious mind where the babies in their childhood have not got enough of mothers milk to suckle on....

Mithun,

Interesting theory and maybe it's true.

The smoking habit can also develop from peer pressure, public image (trying to look cool), from curiosity, or boredom. In my case, though I have since quit, it developed from all of the above.

I read this theory in Book of Secrets by Osho. Or I think it was mediation exercises or something like that from Osho.
