Today's generation on an average is glued to computers and television for over 4-6 hours a day. Apart of obesity, it is creating a more dangerous condition - restless mind. Today's youth cannot relax, the mind is every racing for more information/excitement. And the limbs are static. Which is an absolute opposite of what we are actually made for.

Our ancestors worked hard and their minds were at rest. They enjoyed excellent sleep as their bodies were tired. As a result they had excellent health and were genuinely happy.

Whereas today, I think very few experience deep restful sleep. Majority of us don't even know what it feels to have a good night's sleep. Health is deteriorating and stress is on the rise.

Have you ever tried looking at a object? Can you hold your gaze for more than a second or two without being stressed? It'll give you an indication of the nature of your mind.

When you view television or computers, our mind is in a frenzy, processing information like a computer. And this continues... It is never at rest. With such a state of mind, how can you see things clearly and how can you expect to get a good night's sleep, where all the restoration takes place?

Faster machines are creating even faster and restless minds and I believe we are digging our own grave.

If you can't eliminate computers from your life, don't watch television at least. Just spend the time watching nature, meditate and calm down that monster.

Hi Vishal,

I view it all in the exact same way. To make matters worse, the stress increases exponentially with new stimuli and when we continue to avoid managing it. It gains a lot of momentum and spins more and more out of control.

You mentioned meditation as a valuable solution. That coupled with consistent exercise and massage are what I call the power trio solution for managing stress :) By meditation I mean both mindfulness of the present moment and sitting to literally still the mind.

The Instant Tea generation is another related issue. Along with getting stressed out, everyone is impatient and hurried. You can see this in the way everyone drives. They speed, tail gait, and they weave in and out of traffic like a video game.

The 40+ hour work week in the USA devours too much of our time. We stress out on this and then rush everything else.

Also in the USA everyone is addicted to coffee, which of course stresses out the mind.

Now more than ever, we need to be very proactive in managing stress. Stress is an epidemic.

And we all are promoting this via computers

I think, television and computers are not just the culprits here regarding stress, there are many of them like the newspapers and just by simply reading a story or a novel that has events that can stress us..

We can't avoid stress in this modern world..
One thing that we can do is to learn how to cope up with stress when it hits us..

It varies from person to person. The same story can be interpreted by two people in two different ways One may get very stressed and to the other it may seem trivial! It depends on your existing stress level. If you are already stressed, then even the tiniest things will bother you like hell. Television and computers prepare us to be stressed. Of course it depends on how much time you spend on them. Try making a stressed person to sit and work in front of a computer for hours together and prick him after wards with a needle (not exactly though). You'll know what I mean.

Just like how humans are evolving since ages ( from monkeys etc ) computers and all this is also a part of evolution. Only thing the humans have forgotten is to preserve the nature in the evolution process. If you preserve the nature and take care of it then the nature would take care of us . Through computers one can work wonders, but we should use it properly and wisely.

Too much watching of television and computers gives strain to the mind as well as the eyes. Thus a person is lacking stress management and doesn't get time to relax.

I agree with some of this but not all of it.

Personally, I find watching TV relaxing - although some programs tend to purposely create excitement, especially reality shows etc. But I think on the whole it depends on the individual.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking everything was better in the past. Most of our ancestors had hard lives, and many had a lot of stress, struggling with poverty with no social services or adequte health care. Life expectancy was much lower than it is now. Were they healthier? Not those in the lower classes, who often died of cholera or TB.

In my opinion, it is creating more stress to say that things are a lot worse now. We tend to see more because we have more access to information. But it is how we respond to things that gives us the experience of stress. If we look at the things we have now, such as computers and TV as wonderful, amazing things that help us in our lives, perhaps we could feel less stressed.
