I have always found that video games relieve stress for me.

I have to be very careful not to let them take up too much time but find them quite a bit more fulfilling than watching television.

Like a good book or a good movie, they help me to forget my troubles. I admit that I like to engage in healthy escapism each day for a time.

They are a significant aid in improving and maintaining focus, hand-eye coordination and they are fun

Does anyone else enjoy video games? Do you find that they relieve stress?

I have a different view. While they do provide a good and engaging distraction, they are highly addictive and it's difficult to get yourself off them, just like sugar.

I still remember my school days when television video games had arrived and we were hooked to them. We used to play until our eyes were literally sore. Luckily our parents didn't buy the consoles. We got it from our friend's house for few days.

If not monitored, it can definitely impair the overall development of a child. I had read a recent news about this but I'm not able to find it. This is what I found instead:

Heavy Video Game Use by Kids May slow Brain Development

Recently my son (5 years) was asking for a Gameboy. I got close to giving him one but changed my mind instead!

During my recent vacation trip we had to travel for long hours so I had to do something to keep in occupied.

My brother had one with him and what I did was borrowed from him and gave it to my son saying I had to return it to my friend in couple of days.

The way he got hooked was enough to make me realize that it was a good thing I didn't buy one from him.

I agree that video games can be quite addicting at times, but if you're able to control this they can definitely be a good outlet to relieve your stress and frustrations.

I've also found that you can create a nice social network when playing online games as well. Most online games allow you to create friends lists, which allow you to chat (and voice chat in some cases) with people from all around the world.

I have a lot of fun playing, and chatting in-game, with people I would not normally have the opportunity to meet in real life, which I find to be very up-lifting.

Hi Sean,

Welcome to the forum

While it's true that you get to meet lot of friends online there is a grave danger of us being addicted to the online world and cutting ties with the real world. It's happening everywhere around.

We are emotional and social beings and nothing can replace the feeling of actually being with a friend or relative of family.

We can never function at that emotional level in an online world. Spending more time socializing online will only kill our emotional response and make us more and more mechanical and cold-hearted. And we are already seeing that in present generation.
