Lay offs, demanding jobs, office politics, put lot of stress on the employees. If not managed, it can not only affect your performance but also deteriorate your health. Here are some measures to manage stress in workplace:
* Sit erect with a straight spine. If your posture is not correct, it puts lot of stress on your spine and breathing becomes shallow. This effects your energy levels and alertness.
* Share a joke or participate in joyful discussions. Humor is contagious and it lifts everyones spirits.
* Make friends and confide your problems with colleagues. The old saying that sharing helps reduce problems and increase happiness hold true here too.
* Practice deep breathing every now and then.
* Take mini-breaks by practicing meditation or visualization for 5-10 minutes once every 2-3 hours. You'll be amazed at the freshness and energy it brings in you.

Workplaces can be interesting and peaceful places or can be the most difficult and stressful places to be in. Simple things such as the speed (or the lack of), smoking habits, eating and tea/coffee breaks of co-workers can be slightly upsetting to extremely stressful, depending upon your personality. Add to this the overbearing boss, the taunts related to your age, sex, or race and nationality and you more often than not end up in a stressful workplace. In some societies there is an easy escape when there is full employment and you can get a new job. But how many times are going to change jobs? Such an escape should be the last resort solution. Most workplace related stress situations can be resolved by using local complaint and counselling facilities at the workplace. Amongst the larger employers this is the most practiced and accepted method of resolving stressful situations. There is, in most advanced societies, legislation in place to counter discrimination, however trivial it might look at first sight. The unhappy worker should make use of these facilities.

I tried to do some meditation in my place, but it seemed too difficult for me to concentrate.
Around me, it's a noisy area and it’s hard to find a quite hour during the day.
I have heard about people who can ignore the external conditions during meditation.
What’s your opinion about that? Any help for me?
Can I use some sort of arrangements to cover-up the outside noise?
Thanks.

Be aware of the noise! Just be aware and don't concentrate. Gradually you'll no longer find it disturbing. It's only when you resist it that it troubles you.

I am one of those people who would be able to meditate even while sitting in a tornado lol. It takes some time and practice to be able to block out the noise Don't give up, stick it through and you'll be able to block out those noises in no time

Thanks for the kind reply.
I am trying to follow the instructions and get some concentration even under noisy environment.
What's your opinion about the duration I should be meditating?
Someone told me that there are incidents when someone while meditating, gets self-hypnotized! Afterwards, he or she might not have control over what the body is doing.

You can do it for as long as you enjoy it.

Whoever told you has never meditated or has no idea of what meditation is.

Very true. Just accept the noise as something similar to the heart beat - it is there, so what. I lived next to railway lines for over two years and heard about 6-8 trains pass by daily. I not only learnt to ignore the noise, but slept through it and also meditated through it.

Thank you for the good piece of advice!
I am trying to learn, how to ignore outside noise. However, it happens that once I am meditating, if something happens around me, like someone made a sound which was not expected, I feel like getting a shock.
I was about to faint by the shock once I got. I was meditating, it was calm around and a family member of mine just entered the room opening the door.
The sound of the door opening, just SHOCKED me, and I was trembling even after one minute.

You described an incomplete state of meditation. The ideal to be reached (and not easily reached) is not only a state of tranquility but also a state where the input from your senses does not detract you from meditation. WE have five senses – smell, touch, hearing, taste and vision. Any anaethetist will tell you that during anaethesia, the last sense to go "to sleep" is hearing. Probably and I am not 100% sure about it, during meditation as well, something similar happens. Since the input from the other four senses is blocked, the input from hearing a sound gets magnified if not yet completely blocked. You can try and "cure" this problem by deliberately having sound around you during meditation – even a soothing music or a chant will help. The whole emphasis has to be on the ability to remain detached from these various inputs.
